Over the microphone you say, "Good day, listeners. Today's podcast is on... " And as you continue to say your piece, the recording continues. This record is what people in your neighborhood, in your city, across the country, and even in other parts of the globe can hear as they tune in from their computers or digital audio players.

What are you doing? You are podcasting! As science turns imaginations into realities, you can become a DJ or to be specific, a podcaster, and have your own radio show, and be heard. Anywhere. Anytime. Anyhow you want it. You think this is cool? This is sub-zero cool!

Just as we're getting accustomed to terminologies like e-mail, voice-chat, blogs, and so on, we now have PODCASTING. New Oxford Dictionary defines podcasting as "the digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the internet for downloading to a personal audio player". But really, what is it?

Podcasting is a conjuncture of the words "iPod", the most popular audio digital player created by Apple Computers, and "broadcast", which means to put on air; hence, the association of podcasting to iPod or Apple computers. However, any brand of digital audio player is okay and any computer with a built-in or add-on microphone and soundcard will do.

The recording is uploaded into a website and becomes a web feed, aptly termed a podcast. Podcasts can be any music, advertisement, or information in audio or video format that is downloadable. They range from talk radio, comedy shows, news, political views, evangelization messages, language tutorials, business reports, and so on. Any subscriber can podcatch - meaning, download - and listen to podcasts.

But you say you're not even trained or experienced to be a podcaster? There is no need at all. As webmasters of revenue-generating websites, we have these goals in common:

- Attract more visitors to our sites - Convert more visitors to customers - Keep those customers coming back

What worked last year or the year before might be less successful this year. The playing field changes, and the rules of the game can also change. What should we be looking at for 2006?

Attracting more visitors to our sites

First, take a look at how well your site is doing.

- Are you targeting keyword phrases that people are searching for these days? - Have you studied what your competitors are doing recently? - How many inbound links from quality, related sites do you currently have? - Has your SERP or Google PR changed?

With some do-it-yourself search optimization tools http://articles.websitesource.com/seo_do_it_yourself_8_16_2005.shtml, you can check your site's position in search engines, view its current Google PR, see what words your competitors' sites are optimized for, find out where your site is ranked for search terms, analyze inbound links to competitors' sites, and more. Your site may have been the "it" site for your product or service a couple of years ago, but if you haven't at least kept up with your competitors, potential customers might not make it to your site.

Acquiring inbound links is an ongoing job. If you haven't worked on this aspect of SEO recently, some newer sites are probably good candidates for a link exchange or one-way links to your site. Start by looking at who's linking to your competitors' sites, and look for other sites with related but not competing content.

Also consider the geographical areas you're targeting. To attract more local visitors, get your site listed in local directories and put the name of your city and country in the
tag, at least for the Contact page. To attract more international customers, look for listings in international directories, and offer pricing in more than one currency if possible.

Converting more visitors to customers

You've got people coming to your site. Are they buying from you? If not, why not?

Try to look at your site with fresh eyes. Better yet, get someone else to. Do the colors and design look dated? Does the page look good in newer, larger monitors as well as smaller ones? An updated design may be what your site needs to keep it looking like a quality contender in your field.

Analyze your traffic stats. If you have a lot of visitors who don't click beyond the landing page, either you aren't targeting the right visitors or they aren't drawn in once they arrive. On the other hand, if your visitors typically view a number of pages and then leave, perhaps the path of information and action isn't clear enough. Or there may be another problem with your site that's turning people off.

Of course, the above must be compared with the number of returning visitors. Consumers typically visit a site about three times before buying.

Follow the path from arriving at the site — on any page — to reading about a product or service, finding more information, and placing an order. Is the path easy to follow? Do all the links work? If you have another person looking at your site, watch that person's eye movement, observe if any pauses suggest confusion, and listen to the commentary and questions.

Check that the content is current. If you still advertise a special that expired two months ago, for example, it looks like no one is attending to the business.

Do you offer as many payment options as possible? Perhaps you couldn't afford a merchant account to accept credit card payments when you were starting out, but you can now. If visitors often get to the point of sale and then leave, a lack of payment choices that suit them may be the reason.

Keeping customers coming back

Think about your successes over the past year. What products or services were the most popular? How did people find out about them? What positive feedback did you receive? Use all of that information to make your strengths even better.

If you received any negative feedback, look at it as an opportunity to improve your service or product line.

An opt-in mailing list or newsletter is a low-cost, effective way to keep your company name in your customers' minds. During the order process, provide a check box for customers to choose if they want to receive mailings from you. If they choose yes, you have their permission to send them information about specials, new products, and other news.

People online are becoming increasingly annoyed by spam and aware of privacy issues. Your website should include a privacy policy, and your mailings should include a link for recipients to unsubscribe if they want to. Don't send out regular mailings more than once a month, and provide information that's useful to the recipients.

Content 2006-style

Regular new, quality content attracts more visitors to your site and provides a reason to come back. Once thought of as a fad for personal sites, increasingly more businesses are adding blogs to their websites. Blogs provide a less formal medium to convey information, people can subscribe to them and be notified when they have new content, and they keep search engine spiders coming back whenever you add new content. With thousands of new blogs starting up every day, blogs are the wave of the future.

In this blog, we'll be discussing what's new and useful for webmasters and for people who spend a lot of time online. We invite you to stay tuned.

by Lois S.

Online Payments Make It Easy For Your Customers To Buy

In the last column we discussed the process of credit card enabling your brick-and-mortar business. I pointed out that research has shown that accepting credit cards can help increase revenue and speed up cash flow. This week we will look at setting up an online payment system for your business website. If you think hooking up a brick-and-mortar location with a credit card system stymies most bankers, try asking them how to do it on your website.

The fact is most banks can provide you with the merchant account needed to accept credit card payments online, but beyond that, they have little to do with the process. Even larger banks may only have a single person on staff that is tasked as the "credit card processing expert" and if that person ever goes on vacation, you're pretty much out of luck (voice of experience talking here, folks).

I have helped many clients set up online credit card processing systems and more than once I've had to sit down with the bank issuing the merchant account and educate them on how online payment systems work. Don't believe me? This is a direct quote (here's the Bible, here's my hand) from the manager who was in charge of processing Internet merchant account applications at a local bank, "When someone pays online how do they swipe the credit card in their computer..."

You will need the following to accept credit cards on your website: (1) an electronic shopping cart system; (2) a payment gateway service; (3) a credit card processor; and (4) an internet merchant account issued by a bank or other financial institution or service bureau.

Here's how online credit card processing works. (1) Your customer submits his credit card information at checkout on your website. (2) The shopping cart software sends the transaction to the gateway. (3) The gateway routes the information to the processor. (4) The processor contacts the bank that issued the customer's credit card. (5) The issuing bank approves or declines the transaction. (6) The processor routes the result back to the gateway who then passes the result back to the website shopping cart system. The entire process is done electronically and takes seconds to complete.

We covered most of these elements last week. Here's a quick refresher for those who missed the basics, then we'll talk about the shopping cart system you'll need to implement on your website.

Payment Gateway Service: The payment gateway service comes into play when a customer submits their credit card information to the webpage form. Think of the gateway service as the middleman in the process. The website's shopping cart checkout system electronically submits the credit card to the gateway service that then routes the information to the processor for approval.

Credit Card Processor: The credit card processor is an electronic data center that processes the credit card transactions coming from the gateway company, ensures that the charge is valid, then settles the funds in your merchant account.

Internet Merchant Account: An Internet merchant account is a bank or account in which funds from online sales are deposited by the processor. Merchant accounts are usually issued by banks that are associated with the major credit card services like Visa and MasterCard. Be aware that many banks will not grant merchant accounts to Internet merchants as they are often categorized as "high risk ventures." This policy varies widely and in the end, the granting of the merchant account will come down to economics from the bank's point of view. If the bank sees even the smallest iota of risk, you will not be granted the account.

Fortunately, the growth of online sales has given rise to an entire industry of merchant service bureaus that will grant you a merchant account and everything else you need to accept online payments. The fees are usually higher, but it's better than not having an online payment system at all.

Shopping Cart System. To accept online payments you must have what's called a "shopping cart system" that allows the customer to select and purchase products from your website. A shopping cart system typically consists of three components: the product catalog, the shopping cart, and the checkout/payment system. The product catalog is the component that displays the items you have for sale on the website. The shopping cart system is the component that allows your customers to select products by clicking to "add items to cart," and the checkout/payment system is the component that allows the customer to complete the checkout process and pay for their purchase with a credit card (or in some cases an electronic check). It is the checkout/payment component that communicates with the gateway system to complete the transaction.

Adding a shopping cart system to your website can be a simple or highly complex task, depending on the system you select. The cost of shopping cart software ranges from free (for simplistic form-based systems) to very expensive. Which shopping cart system is best for your business depends on a number of factors, including the product you're selling, the depth of your product line, the purchase options you wish to offer customers, the inventory control functionality, and the extent of automation you desire.

There are numerous companies who can assist in the setup of your shopping cart and online credit card payment system. These companies typically charge several hundred to several thousand dollars for their services, but like anything you get what you pay for, so always use a company with good references in this area. When you're dealing with something as important as credit card processing and cash flow, bite the bullet and get it done right the first time. The money you spend now will be returned many times in increased sales volume from credit card customers.

The most important thing to remember when setting up an online payment system is this: online it's all about security and privacy. Though online credit card processing has been around for years there are still many people who are uncomfortable giving their credit card number online. These are the same folks who do not hesitate to give their credit card number over the phone or hand their credit card to a waiter who disappears with it for ten minutes. Online credit card processing is much less susceptible to fraud and abuse than of those scenarios

by Tim Knox

Everybody’s Got Something to Hide ‘Cept For Me and My Mousey

READ MORE: Mice, PCs, Peripherals, TOP

Here’s a mouse with its own little secret compartment. Getting your website listed in the search engines is vital due to the fact that the majority of website traffic (statistics say over 80%) comes from the search engines. Effective PPC management begins with devising a strategy to drive qualified traffic to your website.

PPC (PPC) advertising is simply advertising your website through the use of the search engines' "sponsored listings". When using PPC you bid on keywords or keyword phrases that your targeted prospects may use to find whatever your website offers. Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly known as Overture) for instance, only considers the bid amount in ranking a site. The most popular PPC Google Adwords uses bid value and your success (click through) rate.

To develop a your PPC strategy and plan, you must conduct market research. This should consist of identifying your target market (preferably a niche market), identifying keywords that your target market uses to search for what you are offering, and analyzing the keywords and alternative keywords that will appeal to your target market.

During your keyword analysis, you will want to find out how popular keywords are and what the average bids are for certain keywords you are considering for budgeting purposes since defining a budget is a necessary part of PPC management.

Budgeting for PPC advertising involves not only determining how much money you can spend on your campaign, but basing that on the monetary value of a click to your website since you are paying per click.

Your conversion rate, the number of unique visitors divided by the number of sales, plays an important role in determining the value of a click to your site for PPC advertising budgeting purposes as does the average net profit per sale. By dividing your net profit per sale by your conversion rate, you can accurately determine the value per click to your website. The price per click that you pay for your PPC advertising should not, of course (!!!) exceed this value.

So if your selling a product that gives you a £10 profit, and a particular keyword takes 50 visitors to create a sale you would bid no more than £0.20 per click to break even.

A few tips about PPC if you DIY.

1. Don't put more money than you have to into your account - sounds obvious but....!

2. Test, test, test have at least two separate ads for the same product at the same time. Drop the lower performing adverts and add a new one until you are satisfied with the results.

3. Make sure to keep up with your results daily at the very least and adjust your strategy according to results.

4. Continue to look for new keywords and as you find new ones lose the poorer performers.

If you approach PPC advertising logically, follow the direct marketing mantra of test, test, test, monitor results regularly and make adjustments only according to results PPC advertising is a powerful tool for driving profitable traffic to your site.

by Richard D S Hill

Sanyo Virus Washer

READ MORE: Gadgets, Sanyo, Virus

At first glance this appeared to be a toaster-esque device that could slot load hard drives for complete virus removal. Therefore, it's not really surprising that across the United States, Europe and Japan, more and more companies are looking to India for outsourcing services. However, India is not just a source for the services of brilliant software engineers. India is full of brilliant web content writers as well.

More and more companies from across the world are turning to India for high quality and cost effective web content writing solutions. India is the first choice for many when it comes to outsourcing web content writing in English. None can match India when it comes to web content writing capabilities and expertise with the English language.

There are many advantages to outsourcing your web content development especially from India. Not only will you manage to save money and time by outsourcing your web content development, but you can also make use of the talents and expertise of the Indian web content writers. India has a diverse and talented group of web content writers who're capable of writing in a wide variety of styles on an extremely wide range of topics. India is a great source for key word rich content writing, ghostwriting, creative web content writing for books, articles, magazines and websites. Indian writers are also experts in book research and writing for authors, white paper research and writing, as well as journalistic writing that includes articles on current events and/or social events and issues. You can also outsource India for travel writing services that include reviews and site selection, magazine articles on almost any subject and business writing — case studies, communication, cultural and management issues.

There are many offering web site content writing services from India. And they're easily accessible over the internet. However, with such a wide range of web content writing services available in India, it's often difficult to decide which web site content writing service is the best and most suited to your needs. But, with the help of a few tips to keep in mind while considering which web content writing service to choose, the whole task of selection can be made easier.

The first step to an easier decision is to decide your area of focus—you need to decide what will be the purpose of your website and what should be the web content. So you need to ask questions like, who will use your web site and what information will they be looking for? Once you're sure of what your web page should contain, the next step is to assess the diversity of the web content writing services that you've short listed. What are their areas of expertise? How good is their network of web content writers?—these are some of the questions that you need to ask yourself while selecting a web content writing service. Some web content writing services have a narrow band of topics and styles of writing. This is alright provided they can meet your needs.

And to familiarize yourself with their style of writing, it's a good idea to read some of their previous articles. A glance at the articles of the web content development companies can give you an insight into their quality and style. The website of the web content writing company is an important source of information regarding the company. It can give you a lot of clues on the way the company functions. For example, a well organized website could be a sign that the company is well organized as well. Also, the contents of their web page can give you an insight into their style of writing and functioning.

So, if you've not already utilized this wonderful opportunity for outsourcing web content development from India, then you've let pass a great business opportunity.

by RNCOS

HDTV - The High Resolution Television

The expansion of hdtv is High-definition television. The hdtv means television signals broadcast with a higher resolution than traditional formats like NTSC, SÉCAM, PAL. The hdtv is broadcasted digitally, except for early analog formats in Europe and Japan.

Historically, the term high-definition television was also used to refer to television standards developed in the 1930s to replace the early experimental systems, although, not so long afterwards, Philo T. Farnsworth, John Logie Baird and Vladimir Zworkin had each developed competing TV systems but resolution was not the issue that separated their substantially different technologies. It was patent interference lawsuits and deployment issues given the tumultuous financial climate of the late 20's and 30's. Most patents were expiring by the end of WW2 leaving the market wide open and no worldwide standard for television agreed upon. The world used analog PAL, NTSC, SECAM and other standards for over half a century.

The terms HD ready and HD compatible are being used around the industrial world for marketing purposes. They indicate that a TV or display is able to accept video over an HDMI connection, using a new connector design, the main purpose of which seems to be to ensure that digital video is only passed over an interface which, by agreement, incorporates copyright protection. Even HD-ready sets do not necessarily have enough pixels to display video to the 1080-line (1920x1080) or 720-line (1280x720) HD standards in full resolution without interpolation, and HD-compatible sets are often just standard-definition sets with an HDMI input. This is a confusing use of the terms HD and hdtv.

MPEG-2 is most commonly used as the compression codec for digital hdtv broadcasts. The hdtv is capable of "theater quality" audio because it uses the Dolby Digital (AC-3) format to support "5.1" surround sound.

Japan has the earliest working hdtv system still in use, with design efforts going back to 1979. Japan began broadcasting analog hdtv signals in the early 1990s using an interlaced resolution of 1035 lines (1035i). The Japanese MUSE (Multiple sub-nyquist sampling Encoding) system, developed by NHK Science and Technical Research Laboratories (STRL) in the 1980s, employed filtering tricks to reduce the original source signal to decrease bandwidth utilization.

Japan is forerunner of hdtv in the world. Japan terrestrial broadcast of HD via ISDB-T started in December 2003.

The hdtv transmission in Europe started in 2004. Euro1080 is the pioneer in hdtv transmission in Europe. Australia started HD broadcasting in January 2001.

CHUM Limited's Citytv in Toronto was the first hdtv broadcaster in Canada and CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) officially launched hdtv programming on March 5, 2005.

Mexican television company Televisa experimented hdtv broadcasts in the early 1990s, in collaboration with Japan's NHK.

The hdtv specifications are defined by the ATSC in the United States. An hdtv-compatible TV usually uses a 16:9 aspect ratio display with an integrated ATSC tuner. Lower resolution sources like regular DVDs may be upscaled to the native resolution of the TV.

The hdtv services were made available in the Republic of Korea in 2005 and Brazil is expected to go for it in 2006.

There are numerous online sources carrying volumes of info on plasma hdtv, lcd hdtv, hdtv antenna, hdtv receiver, dlp hdtv, hdtv cables, hdtv tuner etc. Scores of sites are offering hdtv reviews, hdtv articles and hdtv news that are very helpful for the potential customers to buy hdtv.

by Gagandeep Dhaliwal

Energy time.
Posted by Red in gadgetry...! | E-Mail This Entry

Germanium Vigour Watches. For those that know me this probably seemed like a no brainer. I have a long history of pda dependence going back years to a Palm 3X. However, I already had a pda that I was quite happy with. For the last year and a half I had used my HP iPAQ 2215 for everything from a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), an e-book reader, an MP3 player, a photo wallet, an alarm clock, a mobile web browser(utilizing a compact flash wifi card), among many other things. Trying to cram a phone in to all of this seemed overwhelming, but curiosity - and my need for a new gadget - got the better of me. My search was twofold - look for a new mobile phone and a new provider. With my current cellular provider I didn't get any reception in my home so I needed to find a carrier that did.

Through various unscientific means such as my own opinion polls of friends and work associates in conjunction with some internet research I whittled my way down to either Cingular or Verizon. Both tended to get high marks from the users I polled and the from internet research. With this part of the equation worked out I went online to see what kind of phones each had to offer. I was willing to go with a 2 year commitment in the hopes of getting a better deal on phone and plan pricing. In addition I wanted to get a group plan where my wife and I could share minutes.

So, now I'm looking on each company's respective websites for their state of the art Pocket PC phones. I'm not talking about the Smart phones - these are the phones with Pocket PC software jammed into a tiny little screen that isn't even a touch screen - that just wouldn't satisfy my needs. I'm talking about the full blown, "why are you talking into your calculator?" Pocket PC phones - the uber-geek, pocket protector included kind of micro computer powerhouse. After all, I'm married now and I'm really not worried about public opinion or impressing anyone with my sleek, stylish, sexy new cell phone. I'm hoping to spend around $300.00. I figure I can sell my iPAQ 2215 on eBAY for $200.00 and $100.00 for a new phone seems like a pretty good deal.

So, what I find is one heck of a price tag. Verizon has the much talked about Treo 700. This is the first Treo with the Pocket PC operating system - Windows Mobile 5.0. This comes in at $500.00. Way too pricey for me and it doesn't even have Wifi. Cingular's best price on a PocketPC phone wasn't much better. I could get an HP iPAQ hw6510 for $400.00. Again, no wifi. This is a real sticking point for me. I don't see any reason why a device designed for communication would leave out this major specification. Being able to connect to an 802.11b/g wireless network when it is available is a necessity.

Okay, back to the drawing board, maybe I can try this from a different angle - Ebay. Looking up "Pocket PC phone" on Ebay gets you quite a lot of hits with a good assortment of newer and older Pocket PC phones. At this point I'm thinking that I could get something maybe slightly used that would meet all of my requirements. This would also give me a good cross section of exactly what is out there and what features are available in this type of gadget.

After going through quite a lot of auction descriptions and cross referencing manufacturer web sites I had set my sites on a particular phone, the Siemens SX66. This particular phone/pda combo had been offered by Cingular until recently and it no longer showed on their website. It seemed to fit my wish list: a fast 400mhz xscale processor, wifi, Bluetooth, SDIO slot and it had a slide out keyboard for text input. So, I watched a few auctions and kept an eye on the prices.

But, sometimes you just have to get off of the internet and hit the brick and mortar. I went to my local Verizon and Cingular stores and talked to the sales reps about what plans I was looking for. I wasn't impressed with my long wait at the Verizon Wireless store or the pushy salesman that I got. He seemed to think he knew just what I needed and kept showing me phones and plans that I just wasn't interested in.

I had a different experience at the Cingular store. The sales rep showed me a map of the cell coverage around my home, he talked to me about the plans that I had seen on the website and when I mentioned to him that I had been looking at a Siemens SX66 Pocket PC phone on Ebay he went into the back of the store and came out with the last SX66 that they had. I signed on to a 2 year deal with Cingular that night with a heck of a good deal on a Pocket PC phone that had all the specifications that I had been looking for.

And you know what? I can even talk on my Siemens SX66 sitting in my living room.

by Michael A.
